Derek Thomas, Prospective MP for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, has launched an exciting award designed to promote small businesses in Helston.
“Helston Town Centre has its share of challenges but there is reason to be proud of the mix of small and independent businesses. They are essential if we want to see Helston Town Centre thrive. I believe vibrant town centres create new jobs and encourage aspiration – things that are high on my list of priorities for West Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.” said Derek.
The Helston Small Business of the Year Award runs from October through to late November this year and the aim of the event is to encourage people to shop locally and support small businesses in their communities.
Customers will be asked to vote for their favourite small businesses (they can vote for more than one) using the voting cards available in each participating business or by voting on www.derekthomas.org/smallbusiness.
Derek added, “I have been inspired by the enthusiasm and dedication of business owners here in Helston. This award is a fantastic opportunity for us all to express their support and appreciation of their favourite small business. It is a chance to celebrate the amazing contribution our town centre outlets make to our local community.”
Earlier this year Derek ran similar successful small business competitions in St Ives and Penzance with over 100 high street businesses taking part.
The Conservative Party recognises the huge importance of small businesses to the UK economy – that’s why it has cut up to £2,000 off National Insurance for every business through the Employment Allowance and has introduced significant changes to the Business Rate to help small businesses grow.
A list of businesses that have registered so far is available at www.derekthomas.org.
