West Cornwall MP welcomes help of Penwith student to tackle fuel poverty.
Student, Primrose Brechtmann, has joined Derek Thomas' team on a work experience placement as part of her 2nd year college course at Penwith College.
Since May's General Election the West Cornwall MP has already welcomed four students to undertake work experience alongside his parliamentary staff.
Primrose will work alongside Derek for this academic year, paying particular attention to the issue of fuel poverty in West Cornwall. The Penwith College student is also taking a keen interest in West Cornwall's renewable energy sector.
Derek Thomas MP said 'I have asked Primrose to focus her time on the problem of fuel poverty in the constituency and our renewable energy sector. These are 'hot' topics at the moment and Primrose will be a great help as we seek to understand the challenge better. I have been seeking to address the problem of fuel poverty because we can improve people's lives and reduce admissions to hospital. Growing the renewable energy sector will lead to more skilled and better-paid jobs'.
Primrose, who is studying A Level Business Studies, said ' I am really looking forward to being able to have insight into such an important cause for the West of Cornwall. I have always had an interest in renewable energy having studied Geography at GCSE and AS Level, and I can't wait to understand the political side of how to cope with this growing issue. I am very grateful to have this opportunity and hope to help in any way I can'
Already Primrose has joined Mr Thomas in meetings with Cornwall Council and Isles of Scilly Council Officers to discuss the challenges around high fuel poverty levels in the constituency and with community representatives to discuss the Government's current consultation on Solar Panel Feed-In Tariffs. On Friday, Derek and Primrose joined health campaigners at West Cornwall Hospital to receive a presentation on the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust's installation of renewable energy technology that is predicted to save the three hospital sites nearly £6 million over 15 years.
