I visited RNAS Culdrose to see what goes on behind the chain-link fence. Sadly 771 Naval Air Squadron hands over its search and rescue duties to Bristow Helicopters in a matter of months. We will miss the familiar grey and red Sea King helicopters flying overhead. RNAS Culdrose is much more than search and rescue. For example the 820 Squadron and other Culdrose personnel played a truly significant role in our nation's fight against Ebola and the base continues to be an essential tool in our global humanitarian effort. When it comes to the nation's defence capabilities, the big money (literally) is on the new aircraft carriers and RNAS Culdrose helicopters (and more) will be onboard  HMS Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales from the outset. RNAS Culdrose is here to stay and takes an ever-increasing role on our nation's global stage for decades to come.
My Isles of Scilly visit to host surgeries there coincided with the discovery of a body following the disappearance of Josh Clayton. This serves as a reminder of the dangers along our coastline and is a tragic loss of life and a devastating blow to his friends, family and the small island community, particularly on Tresco. I also visited Heamoor Community Primary School to meet the recently elected School Council and I joined Sports Minister, Tracey Crouch MP, to officially open the Tuff Enuff event held in my home village of St Buryan. The conclusion for me is that I am not Tuff Enuff but I will be in May next year if you want to join my team to undertake this endurance challenge. I am keen to ensure you have an opportunity to speak to me. Hopefully my 'drop-in' surgeries over the Conference Recess provides this opportunity. You can also contact me via the Constituency Office: Wharfside Shopping Centre, Wharf  Road, Penzance, TR18 2GB, 01736 363038 So far my surgeries have taken me to Lelant, Pendeen, Ludgvan, Mullion, St Keverne, Porthleven, Helston, Praa Sands, Ashton, St Erth, Newlyn, St Just and Scilly. For future 'drop-in' surgeries please refer to my Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/derekthomas.org
