The sudden death of our postmaster in St Buryan has shocked our close-knit community and I know that the sadness I feel is shared by the many others who knew John and were customers of his. John was a popular and hugely respected postmaster who always had a friendly and caring word whilst going about his business. Since his passing many people have told me of the way that he would often go the extra mile to help people and watch out for their wellbeing. St Buryan is a poorer community without him and the thoughts and prayers of us all are with John's family. MPs packed their bags and returned to their constituencies last week. This gives me the opportunity to fine tune my constituency office set-up and focus more intently on the issues that constituents have raised since the election in May. On the final day of this term I met with the Roads Minister to ask what he could do to improve the stretch of A30 from St Erth to Newtown Roundabout. The Government will be looking at a new round of road improvement schemes in the next year or two and I will be using this summer to ask local people how they would like this stretch of road improved. Homes have been built, industrial activity has expanded and Ludgvan School has grown. Yet the road remains largely unchanged. I am proud to live in a nation where people are free to protest about things they feel strongly about. So I appreciated the opportunity to meet with protestors in Penzance to listen to their concerns about changes to child and working tax credits. The Government needs to strike the right balance when reforming welfare. There is a need to reduce welfare spending but we need to take care that people do not experience unacceptable (and unintended) levels of hardship. I will work hard to help people who find themselves in this situation and I have offered to hold a regular drop-in surgery in the Changing Room in Penzance so that people can get help when needed.
