I visited two schools for quite different reasons. First, Cape Cornwall School in St Just to discuss challenges facing smaller schools and the need to find ways of making them financially secure. The school has something unique and special to offer its pupils. The other school visited was Ludgvan County Community School, one of three in Cornwall that had a (very big) flag, designed by a pupil, flying in Parliament Square during the Magna Carta Celebrations. It was an honour to hand the flag over for the school to find somewhere big enough to display it! I also continued my 'information gathering' exercise visiting St Julia's to discuss the opportunities and challenges ahead for hospice care in Cornwall. Cornwall Hospice Care has a part to play around integrating health and social care more effectively. I joined a small group of local health campaigners at West Cornwall Hospital to meet Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust's Chief Executive, Bill Shields. We discussed improving the 'choose and book' service, promoting St Michael's Hospital and RCHT's role in changes to how healthcare services are to be provided. Later that day I attended the West Cornwall Healthwatch meeting. As a former member of the group it was good to be reunited with them. Health campaigners play an important role by keeping a welcome focus on patient care. The announcements made last week by the Prime Minister regarding the Cornwall Deal are essentially a commitment by public and private sector organisations to work together to bring responsibility of a few key areas closer to home. The main areas in question are Cornwall's transport, health and social care in Cornwall and on the Isles of Scilly, the development of the skills and jobs agenda and the transfer of assets (public buildings). Organisations including the Government, Cornwall Council, Kernow Clinical Commissioning Group, the Local Enterprise Partnership and in part, the Council of the Isles of Scilly will now begin to put the flesh on the bones. This is very much a lay-person's description of what is intended and does not include everything or everyone. We are at the early stages and much more information will follow.
