I recently took part in a Dragon's Den-style event at The Work Box in Penzance alongside Cllr Tim Dwelly, BID Manager Jess Golding and local entrepreneurs. The event, organised by Tiffany Pope from Pensans CP School, gave pupils from the school an opportunity to present design ideas and products they have developed using recycled items. These products will be on sale on December 9th in the Pop Up Penzance shop in the former Causewayhead Furnishing Shop. We have long been a creative and entrepreneurial part of the world and it is fantastic that our schools are working to nurture talent in this way. I also had the opportunity to take part in activities at Mounts Bay Academy, designed to help year 8 pupils to understand how our democratic and political system works. The enthusiasm of the pupils as they explored this subject was great to see and I hope they continue to engage in our democratic system into adulthood. Joe Smith is a Penwith College Student who recently joined my team as part of his A-Level studies and is taking a particular interest in the EU Referendum and electoral registration. Many will be aware that the system used to register to vote has, and is, changing in order to tackle fraud. I have set Joe with the task of encouraging young people to register to vote. Some suggest that nearly 2 million people could be dropped off the electoral register in the transition and we need to do all we can to ensure people understand this and ensure they are registered to vote. To register visit www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. I take the view that the A30 between St Erth and Newtown can no longer meet the demand we place on it. I chaired a meeting of interested parties on Friday including representatives of Highways England, Cornwall Council and St Erth and Ludgvan Councils to consider what could and should be done to improve this road. This is the beginning of a long journey. If you agree that improvements must be made then please look out for how you can get involved. More next week.
