Derek Thomas launches petition to rebuild Helston Community College

Derek Thomas welcomes news that Helston Community College has secured the funding needed to carry out its urgent rebuilding work. Derek Thomas, who has been campaigning to secure funding for Helston Community College, has welcomed the news that the Community College will receive the money it needs to rebuild its school. The Government’s priority school building programme targets schools in most need of repair. This money will be used to ensure that Helston Community College has the facilities to deliver the best education, so that pupils can fulfil their potential and get on in life.

The Government has allocated an extra £2 billion for investment in buildings at over 270 schools across the country, to address the needs of schools in the worst condition. This is a five year programme, due to be completed in 2021.

Derek commented:

“It is fantastic news that Helston Community College has been awarded this rebuilding money. For too long the staff and students have had to make do with classrooms that urgently need rebuilding. I discussed the urgency of the situation with both David Cameron and Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan last year and have kept in regular contact with the Department for Education ever since Cornwall Council decided not to fund the rebuilding of parts of the school in 2013. We have now secured the funding and I hope it will not be too long before the staff, students benefit from a first class learning facility"

Derek Thomas - A Record of Action:

Helston School Petition

On hearing that Cornwall Council were not going to fund the rebuilding of 'C Block', Derek launched a petition to urge the Council to reverse this decision and rebuild the English and Maths Department. This petition received massive local support and was delivered to Cornwall Council Cabinet in the Autumn of 2013.

Working with Senior Government Ministers

In the spring of 2014 Derek contacted the Michael Gove to raise the issue with the Department for Education.

In July Derek spoke to David Cameron in Penzance about the urgent need to provide the funds for Helston Community College.

In October Derek met with the new Education Secretary, Nicky Morgan MP, and asked her to ensure that Helston Community College was included in the next round of the Priority School Building Programme funding.

Derek has remained in constant contact with the Department for Education.
